COVID-19 Vaccine Information

January 16, 2021

The Covid-19 vaccination effort has begun. Check back here frequently, as we will keep this section updated with new information as it becomes available. (Last update 1/16/2021)

Which patients will have a higher priority to receive the vaccine?

The criteria for deciding which patients should receive the vaccine first is decided by the Vermont Department of Health, based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control. The group currently getting vaccinated includes health care providers and patient-facing staff, nursing home providers and staff, nursing home and senior housing residents. Once that group is complete, which should be around the end of January, vaccine will be given out based on age, starting with all Vermonters 75 years and older. After that, it will go to those 70 years and older, and then 65 years and older. The Department of Health will be vaccinating all patients older than the age of 65 before vaccinating younger patients with chronic health conditions in an effort to reduce the overall fatality rate of Covid-19. Patients younger than 65 years old who have chronic health conditions that put them at high risk of hospitalization or death from COVID-19 (CDC Higher Risk Covid-19 Conditions) will be the next group vaccinated.

Where will I get my Covid-19 vaccine, and how do I sign up?

UVMMC will be administering the vaccine to all patients at a central location like the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds. There will be both a Vermont Department of Health online registration site as well as a registration phone number, and we will post that information here when it becomes available. Those are anticipated to go live on or around January 25th for the first group of Vermonters over the age of 75, with vaccinations hopefully beginning on January 27th. All patients will need an appointment through the Department of Health in order to receive the vaccine.

How will I know when it is my turn to receive the vaccine?

The Vermont Department of Health will be messaging directly out to all Vermonters to keep them abreast of the current vaccination group. You can register for the Vermont Department of Health Weekly Covid Update E-mail here. In addition, Thomas Chittenden will reach out to patients directly when it is time to schedule your Covid-19 vaccine based on vaccine supply and the Department of Health guidelines. Similar to our flu clinics, we’ll use both portal message (if you are on our Patient Portal) as well as phone messages.

Please do not call the office to check on when you will receive the vaccine! Because there are so many questions about Covid-19, on top of patients’ regular medical concerns, we are already extremely busy with managing patient care and phone calls.

Where can I find information about vaccine guidelines, safety, efficacy and side effects?
